There is documented use of essential oils in the practice of nursing. Nursing Theorists throughout modern medical history have used volatile concentrates extracted from plants called essential oils, in order to improve physical, mental and emotional well-being. Eight such iconic nurses Florence Nightingale, Myra Levine, Hildegard Peplau, Martha Rogers, Callista Roy, Wanda Horta, Jean Watson and Katharine Kolcaba are the subject a forthcoming paper by four Surgical Nursing Professors from the University of Sao Paulo Brazil.

The abstract published in February of 2016 on PubMed.gov promises evidence practiced historically and worldwide through Theories of Nursing that Aromatherapy is a Practical or Complementary Health Therapy. Aroma Therapy deserves "theoretical reflection, exploratory and descriptive". When the full text becomes available we will read how the paper "aims to discuss the pharmacognosy of essential oils, the historical trajectory of Aromatherapy in Nursing and the conceptions to support Aromatherapy contributing to its inclusion as a nursing care practice."

When the full text becomes available we will be sure to update you. PMID: 27007430 [PubMed - in process] Free full text coming soon.
